About Camp

Postcards From Camp
H.U.G. Camp was established in 1971 and is located at the Tower Hill Camp and Retreat Center in Sawyer, Michigan. Camp is located about a half of mile to the Warren Dunes State Park. Campers hike to the beach daily to a private section of the dunes belonging to Tower Hill. 

Campers arrive on Sunday afternoon and will get their cabin assignments and name tags. They will report to their cabin with their gear for the week. They will have an opportunity to select a bunk, make their bed, and meet fellow campers as they arrive, as well as meet their counselors for the week. 

Daily Schedule

During the week, the campers stick to a planned out schedule.

7:30   Wake Up - Cabin time, make beds, shower, get ready for the day.
8:15   Trotters report to breakfast to help set-up dining room and tables.

2024 Dates:             
Sunday, July 7th through Friday July 12th

Arrival/Check-In Time:  
  • Check-in time is 2:00pm NOT BEFORE (Camp staff, counselors, and directors are preparing for campers and need the time before to get ready). 
  • Camp is in Eastern Daylight Time, not Central Daylight Time (you will be checking in 1:00pm Illinois time)

Departure/Check-Out Time:
  • Check-out time is 10:00am. Campers will be at the cross ending with camp songs. We'd love for you to stop by and watch.
  • Camp is in Eastern Daylight Time, not Central Daylight Time (you will be checking out at 9:00am Illinois time)

You are encouraged to send mail to your campers.           
The correct way to address your camper's mail is:

  • To be sure your camper receives your mail, it should be mailed no later than TUESDAY. 
  • Mail sent later usually arrives after the camper has gone home. 
  • OR, better yet,...you can drop off mail with the camp director when you check-in or just before you leave on Sunday 
  • Please note which day of the week you want your camper to get each piece of mail (that way you know your camper will get mail while saving you postage).

About Tower Hill Retreat Center

Tower Hill rests on the shore of Lake Michigan in the Dunes region of western Michigan. The camp is a prime example of Midwest dune biodiversity such as one might find at the Warren Dunes State Park nearby, a variety attributable to millennia of winds sculpting and sowing the land. The dining hall at Tower Hill is staffed and available for all meals and snacks your group would need, even if your building has a kitchen or not. Schrag 2 Retreat Center, Wales Dining Hall, and Marshall Hall are wheelchair accessible.
